Figment Introduces E Ink Handheld Game Console Designed for Text-Based Adventure Gaming Experience

A new contender in the realm of handheld gaming has emerged with the introduction of Figment, an innovative E Ink game console designed primarily for text-based adventures. This device aims to provide a unique gaming experience by leveraging the advantages of E Ink technology, which is known for its low power consumption and paper-like display quality.

Unlike traditional LCD or AMOLED screens, E Ink displays are visible in ambient light and do not emit their own light, making them suitable for extended reading and gaming sessions. However, they typically have slower refresh rates, which limits their conventional use in gaming. Nevertheless, Figment challenges this notion by focusing on interactive storytelling.

The Figment console features a 7.5-inch horizontal E Ink display sourced from Waveshare. Its design resembles that of a gaming controller, with three action buttons on the right and four directional buttons on the left. The hardware is powered by an ESP32 microprocessor, crafted from a combination of 3D-printed and laser-cut components.

The software behind Figment utilizes a game engine that combines pre-written stories with artificial intelligence to generate additional content. This allows players to explore narratives that extend beyond the original text, enhancing the interactive experience. While the AI functionality requires an internet connection for content generation, users can access previously generated material offline.

The developer has indicated that there may be potential for open-sourcing the hardware or software in the future. Regular updates are promised on the Figment website, where interested users can stay informed about developments regarding the console’s availability and potential open-source releases.
